Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan has come out and said that the formation of the Congress of the People (COPE) party was due to the “lack of assertiveness and visionary leadership within the ANC over a period of time”, this in reference to the leadership during the Thabo Mbeki era. So this means that, if Mbeki were a ’stronger’ leader then the divisions in the ANC would not have taken place and thus there would be no need for the formation of the breakaway party?

Jordan went on to say that the lack of leadership “weakened the ruling party’s moral authority and undermined its integrity”. What are your thoughts about these claims?

Dr L B Mtimkhulu on 15 November, 2008 at 5:17 pm

TO PALLO: With due respect Dr, you were also in the same Government, then why did you keep quiet! Maybe you need to tell Julius to stop dividing the ANC. Too late for tears!!Damage sealed!

thuto on 17 November, 2008 at 1:09 pm

When will this people stop blaming Mbeki for their mistakes, some of them were part of his cabinet. Why were they not vocal then. Even when people die of AIDS is Mbeki. Why didnt the mighty 1994 government have done something on the prevalance of AIDS, why is it not being blamed. This is stupid!!!!!

Simon on 18 November, 2008 at 6:55 am

Tata, Mbeki we are surprised why people keep on blaming you. To Dr Pallo it is a pitty that he is serving in the ANC that doesnt care about unity, instead they will be saying this are the Mbeki people. Is there any person who joined Thabo Mbeki in the ANC? Since when in the live of the ANC, that people will claim ownership of the elected leadership, we are the Zumas we will deal with the Mbekis, whats the hell is that? Dont you think that due to your own opportunism you are killing your ANC, INFACT YOU KILLED IT. Some of us are called opportunists if thats the case why dont you silently appreciate that they are gone for COPE and you will never get a contestant. Why there are noises throughout about their departure? You feel it that your ANC is going down the Drain. Leave COPE alone and focus on your rotten ANC.

Willie on 18 November, 2008 at 11:23 am

COPE is simply a result of the manner in which Mbeki was treated(kicked out). It was the final straw, however if they left him in for his full term I am sure the split would not have happened. The Shikota’s would just have remained disgruntled but within the ANC. But this change was needed, so Viva COPE Viva

David on 18 November, 2008 at 4:34 pm

I would like to disagree with Minister Jordan who in this case has lost the plot completely. The formation of COPE is a direct result of the winds of CHANGE that are evident and encompassed by society and nations world wide in the politcal scene. The people are more determined and eager for CHANGE whether in America, Zimbabwe , Middle East , Asia etc.And the parties like CORE in a situation whereby people yearn for change will emerge and act as vessels for change.Minister Jordaan should acknowledge the fact that his party in its current make up it is indeed a monster that need to be subdued fearlessly by any peaceful means necessary.I cannot see how his party will be immune from the winds of change especially if it has within its ranks people like Malema who happens to be their think tank , people like Vavi and Blade who are clueless and purport to have an understanding of sound economic policies.People who undermine the Judiciary and the rule of law, People who preaches that Matric is not important.People who do not respect the constitution.People who have no political tolerance. People who advocate stalinist commanding heights economic policies.People mistakes freedom of expression for war talk and gutter politics.Beware of the winds of change Mr Minister.

ANC will, without fail, sail into oblivion because they do not stop and do introspection. They are too grand to admit when things are not going on well within. They should know that some on these issues are so embarrassingly clear to conceal. This attitude will see them wiped out of the face of politics just like the NP, and this is coming rather sooner than later. The barbaric strategy of intimidating their competition will yield the unintended consequences for them. God help us, we don’t end up in stupid wars.

Lemmy on 17 December, 2008 at 9:23 am

Personally. I think this is good, infatc great things that has happened. The ANC had become complacent and felt that they would be in power “till Jesus comes”. THey wold have been even more compacent than they are now. COPE has come at the right time to keep the ANC on its toes. The DA is a barking dog without teeth nor feet and the ID is small but had some opposition but not good enough to keep the ANC on its toes. Don’t even mention the UDM. If we then are to blame Mbeki, then well done to him for doing what he did and thanks to him the political landscape is now vibrant more than ever, not to mention fertile.

geraldo lesotho on 17 December, 2008 at 10:08 am

cope is for all africans, and the so called ANC is maily Zumas. so why should we vote for the ANC?. They introduced democracy that was good! They will build structures today and tomorrow they would be on public declering to have removed someone from his position! without our concern as voters and supporters of their ANC. Lets be fair to MR.Zuma; you can lead your ANC yes but not our COUNTRY.

Bheki on 3 February, 2009 at 3:50 pm

The above comments are devoid of objective reasoning. My understanding of Dr Jordan’s statement is that: had it not been for Mbeki believing that he was the only capable leader in SA, and convincing his cronnies of the same, COPE would not have been.

Now anyone who seeks to give interpretations which places the formation of COPE at the door of the ANC, also believes that Mbeki is the only capable leader in SA, and without him, we are doomed.

But such theory has already been proven wrong: SA after the recall of Mbeki has continued to work. Economic crisis we are expriencing are experienced by all countries of the world.

As for Geraldo’s comment, I don’t understand this concept of ‘mainly Zumas’. The ANC is for everyone who belives in what it stands for. There’s only ‘Zuma’ in the first 500 in their election list. As to whether Zuma will ever be President of SA, lets leave it to the voters to decide, it won’t be long from now.

Mr Minister,if you can identify the problem within your rotten party then just start fixing it.Leave Mr.Mbeki alone, history will judge him,he’s not even a member of the nec anymore. All of you in that nec will lead the ANC into oblivion.Your think tank,Malema, doesn’t even know the meaning of the words “assertive” & “visionary”.You all can just go to hell with your rotten ANC.

Bheki on 16 February, 2009 at 7:02 pm

The ANC certainly identified the problem, at leasst the main, in its party. They fiexd it last year September.Fact that Mbeki was in public office, and would still be if things went his way, means that members of the public have the right to jugde him. He was not the president of history, but of the people. So let the people judge him.

barker on 23 February, 2009 at 9:36 am

u c bheki u seem 2 lav corrupt leaders bt anyways i dnt blame u its in da anc blood

trudy on 5 March, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Its strange Dr how you have such strong opinion after the damage is done, where was this zeal speaking out when you were in the cabinet. Mbeki from my perpsective was a good leader who focused on the country and its crises and how it can be solved rather than wooing the media and dragging the countrys name in the mud.
