The drama in Zimbabwe seems to continue. Now there is a ship wondering around the oceans of Africa with tonnes of weapons and ammunition meant to be delivered to Zimbabwe. It seems that Mugabe is scrambling around to get as much ‘fire power’ together to help protect himself and his troops and at the same time use those weapons to start terrorising Zimbabweans in the build up to a potential presidential vote run off.
A report in yesterdays Sunday Times outlined that Mugabe has been trying very hard to get new weapons into Zimbabwe but is struggling to get the foreign currency to purchase those weapons and that the local producer of weapons in Zimbabwe is no longer producing weapons. So who does Mugabe term to for help? His ‘trusted’ partners China! I bet Mugabe never thougt he would have an issue getting the weapons into Zimbabwe. How he must be wishing Zimbabwe was not a land locked country. Mugabe is currently not in most African leaders good books and maybe he thought that since South Africa’s Thabo Mbeki said there was no crisis in Zimbabwe he could rely on Mbeki allowing his shipment of weapons to enter through South Africa but Mugabe was wrong! His cargo of weapons has not been allowed through South Africa. Well done Mbeki for this move!
Reports now suggest that the ship is destined for Angola and may try to offload the cargo in Angola and then have it delivered to Zimbabwe. But now with the whole world knowing that there are tonnes of weapons destined for Zimbabwe, Mugabe will not easily get those weapons into the country. Pressure will be on all African countries to deny those weapons from entering Zimbabwe at all costs. It is clear that if those weapons to arrive in Zimbabwe, ‘all hell’ will break loose in the country.
I think we should be greatful that these weapons were not snuck into Zimbabwe and that we all now know what is happening and something can be done to prevent those weapons from entering the country. African leaders may have taken a laid back approach to Zimbabwe but they have to put their foot down on this one and make sure there is no way these weapons can land in Zimbabwe.
What strikes me is that without the transparency created by newssources like you and by the blog community, Mr. Mugabe would have had an easier time achieving his mischievious plans.
